Vanmechelen (b. 1965) has taken part in significant biennales and exhibitions such as dOCUMENTA (13), Manifesta 9, the 4th Guangzhou Triennial, World Expo Shanghai and at the 3rd Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art.
He has participated in multiple exhibitions at every Venice Biennale of Art since 2007 including Nato a Venezia, a solo exhibition in 2011. At the 55th Venice Biennale of Architecture, he was part of the Lisson Gallery group show Genius Loci – Spirit of Place. The artist has exhibited at major institutions worldwide, including the National Gallery, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Museum Kunst Palast, Düsseldorf; Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Amsterdam; MAD museum, New York, and PushkinMuseum, Moscow.
Vanmechelen lives in Meeuwen-Gruitrode, in the northeast of Belgium. He is an honorary citizen of his native town of Sint-Truiden and received an honorary doctorate at the University of Hasselt in 2010. He has also presented at the United Nations and received numerous distinctions including the Golden Nica Prize (2013).
